I'm not doing UTF8 at all, but something else that follows the same patter. 7bit remains 7bit, but depending on the high bit you may have to do something fancy. At this point you have two format-choices. Either the higher bytes are interleaved with the 7bit stream, giving you a variable-length code similar to Huffman or x86 instructions. Or you move the high bytes out of the way and have one buffer that is 100% low bytes.

Your description translates to:

if (!high_bit_clear)

Unless your text is 100% 7bit, the branch predictor will get that branch wrong a *lot*. The pattern of special characters is simply unpredictable. If the rate is low enough you could do semi-vectorization:

bitset = movemask(input & 0x80-vector));
while (bitset) {
pos = ctz(bitset);
/* do whatever you need to do */

That's slightly better. If the high bit is rare, you skip 32 or 64 bytes at a time. If the high bit is common, you're down to one mispredicted branch per 32 or 64 bytes. But it's not as good as:

/* do whatever you need to do, 32 bytes at a time */

Even if you end up with a fair bit of code and spend maybe 4 cycles per 32 bytes, that's less costly than one mispredicted branch every 128 bytes.

Heh! One mispredicted branch every 128 bytes would be 1%, wouldn't it? ;)

For UTF8 I can agree with that. For other examples where you have variable-length integers, you do need the actual integers in a fixed-length format at some point.

Similar example would be parsing x86 binaries vs. parsing arm binaries. My x86 parser ended up having somewhat hairy code and being slow. The arm parser was less code, faster to write and runs much faster. The difference is that you know precisely where the arm opcodes are (ignoring thumb), while any byte in x86 may be opcode or part of the argument. You can cheat a bit and say "if it looks like my opcode I will just treat it like my opcode", depending on what you are doing. But even when cheating, you have to then mask out the next 4 bytes or whatever because they are part of the "opcode" you just dealt with.

The arm parser had a single loop with zero branches inside. The x86 parser has two nested loops plus two extra conditionals. No wonder it is slower.

I know that you like the variable-length aspect of x86 code and your argument that density matters makes sense. But given my experience, I wonder if x86 simply has a harder time issuing 6 instructions per cycle than arm does. It simply takes more logic to find the instruction boundaries. In some cases it may even be impossible to find all boundaries in time.
