It seems like 64 bytes is a good optimum for general purpose code. If you are throwing around large vectors and matrices of course your optimum would be somewhat higher, but for general purpose code the right solution is a smaller cache line and a good prefetcher. Once misses start happening you will gain performance by correctly predicting the next few misses. If increasing cache line were a solution it would have been standard long time ago (remember P4 experiment with 128-byte cache line).

If you already have the hardware to support smaller cache lines why would you complicate hardware further? Basically you just need to prefetch the peer cache lines and you achieve essentially the same thing. This is not on the critical path and I vaguely remember at least one BIOS had an option to enable prefetching of neighboring line but I have no idea on what level exactly it might have been implemented.
