It's probably not Steam per se, but all the software installed via Steam (Steam itself is available for Linux, so if they had bugs related to case-sensitivity, they should have fixed them a decade ago already). Just speaking statisticly, I wouldn't be surprised if our games didn't work on case-sensitive file system on OS X, even if there's been half a dozen case-sensitive platforms they do work on.

On Windows, Steam sets the installation directory of the games, which is in program files, world writable, because some games don't like it if they can't write to their install directory. It's probably a similar problem: even if 99 % of the games worked fine, 1 % is still hundreads of games.
