Let's turn this around: why would someone want to run anything in a VM, if there's no downside to run on bare metal?
I have never bothered to learn to use VMs well, because they've never been part of any frequent workflow of mine. I've also never learned to use OS X well, so if I got a Mac and for some reason wouldn't want to sell it, installing Linux would be the most obvious option. Windows with Bootcamp is another option, but in my experience it doesn't work very well (my experience is half a decade old, but I doubt Apple has spent much time fixing the minor issues).
Of course, if you want to know why someone would go through the trouble of making the Linux run on M1 in the first place, and does that make sense, it's quite a different question. At that point I guess one could ask if it made sense to create a new Unix-like OS, when there's already Minix and whatnot available. I certainly wouldn't have bothered, but perhaps that's the important reason why it's called Linux, not Jukkix.
