While indeed a single AM4 computer with Ryzen 9 5900 X or Ryzen 9 5950X is disadvantaged compared to a Threadripper with more PCIe lanes and more memory channels, depending on the application, using 2 computers with AM4 instead of 1 with Threadripper can be a solution.

The cost of 2 computers with 2 12-core or 16-core Ryzen 9 CPUs and with 1 GPU each is very close to the cost of a single computer with a 24-core or 32-core Threadripper and double memory and with 2 GPUs.

Depending on motherboard & case choices, either of the 2 variants can be cheaper, because 1 Threadripper is more expensive than 2 AM4 Ryzens, so that can cover most of the extra costs with the 2nd MB and the 2nd case. In any case, the differences in price will be very small compared to the total prices of the systems.

For tasks where the communication between the parallel threads is not an important part of the execution time, 2 computers with Ryzen 9 5950X will be much faster than 1 current 39xx Threadripper and still faster than a future 59xx Threadripper.


Of course, there are many applications where having all threads in the same computer will be faster, due to lower communication overhead.

There are also many applications where using 2 computers instead of 1 is a good choice, so this choice depends on your needs, but you should be aware of this alternative.
