It was pointed out to me via email that even the normal, non-pro Threadrippers have official ECC support. One can see this on either TRX40 socket page or on Threadripper CPU pages. I'm not sure why they have Threadripper Pros though.
So high core count consumer case is solved, no need avoid ECC there, and no need to settle for lower clocks or to pay through your nose like with Xeon-W.
