The Amiga had a (quite reliable in practice) "recoverable RAM disk" feature which made use of this. After boot, it would search through free memory for correctly-checksummed data and mount it as a virtual device.
First implemented by Perry Kivolowitz in late 1986, it became part of the standard OS in 1998. It was actually put into the Kickstart 1.3 ROMs (sort of the Amiga BIOS, but much better integrated), so you could even boot from it and get to a GUI without disk access.
