Disk sector sizes only have to do with ECC and overhead. CD, DVD, and large MO disks use 2048 byte sectors. The change from 512 to 2048 byte sectors in MO disks increased capacity from 540 to 640 megabytes.
Flash memory uses larger sector sizes for the same reasons.
