I agree that including a cellular modem in a laptop is stupid in a world where everyone who uses a laptop also uses a smartphone, and thus can tether it if they need access where wifi isn't available. Qualcomm and to a lesser extent Intel really want to push that vision of the future, even though they surely must know that will never be more than a very small niche market.
I don't see why the Nuvia core will help Qualcomm, they already offer ARM SoCs with more than good enough performance for the huge browsing+email+streaming market. They don't sell well because the addition of the cellular modem makes them too expensive to compete. No doubt the superior performance of the Nuvia core versus ARM designed alternatives will make them believe their laptop SoCs deserve even higher pricing, which sure isn't going to help turn things around.
