I do not believe that it is dumb.

One advantage is that basing the description of the state of the art on information published by a competitor ensures that one does not accidentally disclose any proprietary information of their own.

From my point of view, of a third party who reads the patent, I think that a description of the state of the art based on products of a competitor is much more credible than if it were based on older products of the company that files for the patent.

The purpose of the description in the patent is to argue that the claims refer to methods that are both new and useful, in comparison with the state of the art, not in comparison with older products of the same company.

When a company compares its latest product with their previous product, instead of comparing it with the best competitive products, it is much easier to demonstrate improvements, like in the Apple presentations, when they have always showed the very large improvements over previous Apple products, instead of showing modest or non-existent improvements over the best competitive products.
