The problem with "use your own workload" is that for this you must buy all the candidate computer systems, or at least gain total access to them for a limited time, but the latter is seldom possible.

Except for very large companies, few can afford to buy samples for testing from all interesting computers, or are able to convince manufacturers to send them samples for testing.


Whenever I have bought a computer, the initial testing has revealed a lot of information about its performance in my own workloads that I could not guess from the published benchmarks or online reviews.

Some times I have been satisfied with my choice, other times I have regretted the spent money, as they could have been used for another better variant, but I have learned this too late, on my own cost.


Because frequently nobody publishes results for your exact workload or one close to it, we have no choice but to estimate the performance from standardized benchmarks, hoping that their scores are correlated with those that really interest us.



What I find missing from most published reviews, is more data about the thermal and power characteristics of the tested systems.

Most reviews have a little information, but not enough. I do not care about the results from running tens or hundreds of programs that I do not have, so I cannot run them on my own computers to compare the results with the published scores.

What would be more useful to estimate the performance would be to always have complete data about which values have been configured for all the power limits and time constants that control the turbo clock frequency and also the results of tests about how the clock frequency varies depending on the number of active threads, both during the start and in the steady state, at least in 2 scenarios, when compiling a large software project, and when running some benchmark that executes SIMD FMAs and loads/stores at maximum rate, using AVX or AVX-512.
