Intel Falcon Shores = Xeon CPU + Ponte Vecchio GPU + cache chip

I just read an interesting article that mentions Intel’s Falcon Shores processor (hpcwire.com/2022/02/18/intel-announces-falcon-shores-cpu-gpu-combo-architecture-for-2024/). Falcon Shores is a module containing 3 dies: a Xeon CPU, a variation of the Ponte Vecchio GPU and a “new extreme bandwidth shared memory being developed by Intel”. The Xeon in Falcon Shores probably uses the same E-cores as the Sierra Forest Xeon, which is being released the same year.

The “extreme bandwidth shared memory” could be a last level cache shared by the Xeon and the variation of Ponte Vecchio. Assuming Intel gets their process technology troubles behind them, making their own “extreme bandwidth shared memory” could give them a significant cost advantage compared to Nvidia and AMD, who have to buy HBM DRAM from the few remaining DRAM vendors.

The main competition for Falcon Shores is Nvidia’s Grace Hopper. Grace Hopper is a module containing a 72-core Grace CPU and an H100 GPU. If Falcon Shores has 12 channels of DDR5 DRAM (like Granite Rapids and Genoa), the Xeon in Falcon Shores will have about 20% more DRAM bandwidth than the Grace CPU in Grace Hopper (600 GB/s vs 500 GB/s). The capacity of the “extreme bandwidth shared memory” in Falcon Shores will certainly be less than the 80 GB HBM in Grace Hopper. Falcon Shores might work well on compute-intensive workloads needing a lot of DRAM but having a relatively small working set that fits in the “extreme bandwidth shared memory”. If the variation of Ponte Vecchio supports graphics, Falcon Shores could be a good processor for engineering/scientific workstations.

What do people here think of Falcon Shores?
