A15 showed the slightly better than frequency scaling on GB5 for SPEC, along with substantially lower energy usage.

Call it copium if you like (one good thing about 2022 America is that you soon learn just common are mindless insults, and the minds that spout them) but it's it's been clear since the A15 was released that it was essentially an energy-centric update, not a performance-centric update. Sure, any performance design concepts ready to go were rolled in (one suspects there has been some work done to the TLB subsystem, for example), but they were not the focus.
I suspect we will see better scaling on SPEC than on GB5 (enough to at least achieve the all-important dick-measuring SPEC2017-Rate1 trophy), but, as I've said before, this is not an interesting CPU in terms of the overall Apple strategy, it's a place-holder CPU while everything is lined up for the next step.


The original poster did not include GB Metal, which gives us about perhaps a 50% speedboost.

Sure 20% of that is just 10 vs 8 GPU cores, but the rest is some nice IPC engineering. Of course this is in line with what we also expected from the A15.

BTW there was a nice demo at WWDC of an ML training setup based on 4 Mac Studios (I assume Ultra's, but they did not say) connected in a ring via Thunderbolt, running TensorFlow, and showing essentially perfect scaling from 100 updates per sec to 400 updates per sec. Once again, you can look at the numbers and say that *today* nVidia pods can do far better; the more interesting point is that Apple is indicating an interest in growing bigger in enterprise/departmental ways, not just smaller or lower power, and not just single CPU large SoCs.
