That is not true.

Apple's own presentation of last week showed that the new M2 has only 87% of the single-thread performance of i7-1260P, which is not supposed to be the top of Alder Lake P (that would be i7-1280P, but it does not appear to be available anywhere).

However, according to Apple, the 87% speed was obtained using only 25% of the power consumption, so Alder Lake reaches its maximum speed only by degrading severely its energy efficiency.


Apple M2 might beat Alder Lake P in the multi-threaded benchmarks, because those are running under power-limited conditions, so the CPU with the best performance per watt should win.

In single-threaded tasks, Apple M2 does not have any chance against Alder Lake, because Alder Lake has reduced the difference in IPC in favor of M2 to around 30%, which is not enough to compensate the 50% frequency advantage of Alder Lake.



Intel Meteor Lake, which is expected in the second half of 2023, is claimed to have an IPC similar to what Apple M1 and M2 have today, but at a higher clock frequency.

Of course, until then it is pretty certain that Apple will introduce another generation of CPUs, with even better IPC than M2, so it remains to be seen how Meteor Lake will compare to those.
