Cannon Lake vs Kaby Lake

Usually this is what is going on when Intel has hundreds of similar parts.

I think Brett is thinking of the 10nm Cannon Lake CPUs that Intel shipped in limited quantities in 2018 and seems to have been driven by something other than market segmentation.

The 10nm i3-8121U Cannon Lake was quite comparable to the 14nm Kaby Lake i3-8130U:

  • 2 cores, 4 threads

  • 4 MB L3 cache

  • 2.2 GHz base frequency (3.2 and 3.4 GHz turbo; Kaby Lake was faster)

  • 15W TDP

  • 37.5 GB/sec DRAM



But the 14nm Kaby Lake part came with an IGPU and the 10nm Cannon Lake part did not. The Cannon Lake part DID come with AVX-512 which the Kaby Lake part did not have, but for low power budget laptops (which was the target for these) adding AVX-512 and leaving out the IGPU makes no sense.

Everyone at the time believed that the the IGPU in the Cannon Lake was fused off because of yield problems but that Intel shipped the part (in low volume) to hit some sort of 10nm shipping commitment.
