What are the highest priority things needed for Apple to make a viable server?
Three things I think are needed for a viable Apple server are:
* inline ECC (Error Correction Code) for the LPDDR DRAM
* ECC for the caches and other large RAM blocks
* the same amount of verification that Intel and AMD do for their server chips
Cell phone customers are more tolerant of occasional errors than server customers, especially financial institutions. There needs to be enough decoupling capacitors on-chip and on-package to keep the supply voltage stable under all conditions. There also needs to be enough manufacturing testing to catch timing errors due to things like one via having excessive resistance, one wire being too thin in some place or one transistor being a little too slow. Compared to what they do for cell phone chips, Apple will need a lot of more software torture testing, reliability testing and built-in self-test hardware to make a viable server.
