Obviously VAX FP format is very different from that of x87; but MC88000 is/was a standard RISC like MIPS or Alpha, which can be emulated quite well on a VLIW.
I don't see how the Moto MC88000's comparison result generation is non-standard or strange?!? The RISC method of comparing two registers and writing the result into a third is efficient and easily supported by VLIW.
