The Montecito will operate at lower voltage than the
Madison. There should be significant power savings
in the L2 cache by splitting it - the CPU initiates L2
accesses in parallel with dcache accesses which
is a significant activity factor. Splitting off a separate
instruction L2 for means one fewer port in the existing
L2 cache and simpler/shorter datapaths and simpler
queueing and arbitration logic and less activity to the
L3. The Montecito also implements a new form of
active power management in which it may throttle
down for workloads that draw more power than SPEC
CPU 2k (which isn't worst case for IPF).
