BTW: if wire delay is so critical and if the possibility that e.g. at the 35nm node we must do away with OOOE to continue to increase clock rate and we must also reduce the number of execution units, does this mean a step back to in-order, non speculative execution where the compiler and the ISA are more important? Will duplication/specialization for register files be the only way to survive?
