Yes. He attributes vaguely, that's all we really know. The software he is testing does not use IO heavily and I doubt it makes a great number of system calls (but there is no way of knowing).
It could be one of many parts of the OS X system that let it down. It is likely to be some of the cruft in Darwin Libc for example. In most Unix programs library calls are more common than system calls (though lib calls often make syscalls themselves).
