You're totally making up your own argument, just to then
argue against it.

Where did I say "equally fast"? nowhere. You
totally and utterly made that up.

Of course some operations are going to be
slower than others. But that is an implementation
choice, not an architecturally visible one. And then
at some point, you can make an implementation that doesn't
even notice.

For example, let's take the "unaligned access" case.
That's a classic example that should be done in hw, and
that often (but not always) is slower to handle. But the
reason it should be done in hardware is that if you do it
in software, it is always going to remain slower
and bigger, while a hardware implementation can eventually
decide that they want to handle it by throwing resources
at it.

The thing is, unaligned accesses can be handled as fast
as aligned ones once you do a full byte shifter, and once
you end up having a banked cache that can access the banks
in parallel. Suddenly, the "do unaligned in hw" ends up
being easier to decode and you can even do clever things
like predict things dynamically.

The "robust" approach is to not fixate to a particular hw
implementation, and it often will result in better
performance in the end, exactly because:

- you made it easier for everybody else by not having them
have to care about your level of problems (and this is
huge)

- you probably made it easier for yourself too by not
shackling yourself to a particular way of doing things.

Your "same speed" argument is total and utter crap,
because it's not true, and it was something that you
made up. Not me. What I said that you should make everything
fast (the so-called "Amdahls law"), but you added the
"equally" to just argue a point that I never made.

Now, it's interesting how "eventually", in the long run,
a lot of the hard cases turn out to not be so hard after
all, and quite often, it does end up being almost equally
fast. For example, unaligned accesses generally do
end up being "equally fast", although they obviously use
more resources for it, so you may be in a situation that
they have the same speed individually, but they don't
parallelise quite as well, for example.

And the thing is, the same is true of memory ordering.
There are roughly two ways to handle ordering:

- have barriers and flush the queues around them.

This is the simple and slow way to handle it.

- run full speed, never flushing, and trackign the
dependencies. If something turns out to violate the
ordering constraints, you micro-trap and redo, and
you can generally have some dynamic prediction for
this too (ie "I've done this sequence before, and I
messed up last time, so let's go slow").

This is actually what people are doing anyway
because they do all memory out-of-order even locally,
so they need things like alias detection dynamically.

Notice? The latter clearly requires more resources, and
you wouldn't have done it twenty years ago. But it is
done today, and from a performance angle, it's a superior
approach
.

Notice? Your "barriers" are actually slower. The
only advantage they had was that they were simpler.

So don't talk to me about "equally fast". That was never
the issue. The issue was that it often turns out that
not exposing micro-architectural fragility is actually a
good thing two generations later.

Of course, the x86 architects didn't think of it that way.
They didn't set out to create something that 30 years
later would be a superior architecture. But they actually
did two things right:

- they designed the instruction set for a human, rather
than for a compiler (which indirectly meant that they
chose "higher-level" abstractions)

And yes, they did it because they "didn't know better",
and because that's what everybody did at the time.

- But more importantly, ever after, the improvements
were basically conditional on backwards compatibility,
and it probably doesn't even matter that much where
you start from if you have a long time of doing some
incremental improvements that shouldn't break old
stuff.

The "incremental improvements" approach probably tends to
be fairly robust on its own, because you get this amalgam
of things that have worked. It's just slow, and these
days, architectures seldom have decades to get it right
any more..
