This article will bring together all the existing information on Barcelona, AMD's next generation design, into a single place, discussing the system aspects and microarchitecture of Barcelona as well as the circuit design challenges and performance.
AMD's run of good luck started in 2003 and ended in 2006, when Intel released the Core 2 and grabbed the performance and efficiency crowns. This put AMD, yet again, into a tight corner, with only one way out. Of course, that's a situation that's familiar to AMD. Again, the engineers at AMD have delivered the goods - taking an excellent product, and conservatively extending and enhancing it to produce a better one. Barcelona will certainly give Intel a run for their money, and will probably dominate HPC and lead for MP servers.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone at AMD that I've talked to about Barcelona. This article took a lot of effort, going back and forth with PR, and various engineers. Without their help, I wouldn't be able to write this excellent article.
