I doubt there would be much decline in 4-way server sales.
While # of cores/socket is going up, the trend towards
virtualization means customers like to consolidate more
applications towards fewer servers. So, the 4-way server
space get a boost with this, which should offset the
pressure from 2-way servers quite a bit. While the 4-way
server sells at a premium compared 2-way servers, they
also have benefits in terms of lower management/power/
cooling overheads. Ultimately, the server vendors like to
sell more 4-way servers than 2-way servers because they
get better margins and support contracts, and would always
find innovative ways to sell them.
