The downsides of double-sided boards are legion.

It's really hard to design enclosures with good access
to both sides, for example.

It's also purely a mechanical issue: it's really hard
to support a double-sided board. A single-sided one is
a lot easier (where "single-sided" may obviously still
have components on the other side: soldered down and
low-profile).

The mechanical one is pretty important. It gets more
so when you have heavy-duty heatsinks etc. You need good
support. Having the chassis (or frames) just support it
at multiple points on the "backside" of the board just
makes everything easier and more robust.

Of course, you can work around it, but I don't think
very many places do, or are likely to do so in the future.
It's just painful on so many levels..

It's easier to do double-sided with the smaller
boards that you can slot in on rails or using a simple
single-sided connector thing. So things like blades (or
just expansion slots) are much more likely to be double-
sided.

For those kinds of boards you don't have the access issues
(although you often do have the things they slot into
designed for single-sided boards anyway!), and the purely
mechanical issues are also much easier with a smaller
board (ie a small board isn't likely to need any real
support - it's not going to be holding heavy things).

But the main motherboard designed for four or eight
high-power sockets? Doesn't sound very likely.
