The problem was actually that they used two different metals for the block and the head - which expanded at different temperatures/rates. The 'solution' was to use a thicker gasket that (hopefully) would not leak because of this problem. It didn't always work. I had a friend that had to get a new gasket installed about every year until he finally got fed up and sold his truck.

The point I was making was not that this slipped out of the design room, nor that the product was actually sold. That I can understand. How it was handled, however, was to deny any problem existed for 7 years and then offer only a feeble solution. Had they addressed it in the first year, they would have prevented 4 more years of buyers getting stuck, and probably could have offered a more permanent solution to those who actually discovered and reported the problem. In the end, Toyota did not really save any money and got quite the black eye for its behavior. Not unlike Intel and the FDIV bug.

So, it is *good* that Intel and AMD disclose their errata. This way you actually have enough information to make an informed choice. Even if the bug is a real problem, Intel and AMD should be applauded for disclosing rather than trying to hide it. This also is a very good QA procedure - it forces them to be more careful in their design and testing, which in turn minimizes bugs. What I find amazing is that many actually cannot see this relationship, and results.

Regards,
Dean
