I looked all over for a thermal photo of any microprocessor before making the previous post, but I couldn't find anything. Today -- by happenstance -- I stumbled across a thermal graph of the Cell chip itself (slide 20):

As you can see, the hotspots are generally in the functional units of the processing cores (the PPE, and the eight SPEs). In contrast, the I/O is relatively cool, with the XDR I/O cells being heated by the PPE core. If you look at the following photo of the SPE, you can see that the hotspots are the GPRs, and the single-precision functional unit.
