I never said that the absence of consensus DP SIMD is a "shortcoming" of PPC ISA. IMO, it's o.k. SIMD is certainly much more viable for in 8/16/32bit calculations than for 64-bit ones. The only niche at which I would probably want DP SIMD is a high end embedded MPUs but at that space non-standard ISA extensions are fine.

I just wanted to refute the following argument of mpx:
"SSE5 on the other hand is a general purpose instructions set, viable for technical and scientific applications. What's more these instructions are of a known, proven quality, as they are similar to what's available in other (eg. PowerPC) ISAs."
When people refer to "technical and scientific applications" they normally have DP in mind and in that field SSE5 at very basic level (word width) is decisively different from "generic" PPC/Power.
