Hmm.. well that may be. However, I will note that when reading the SSE5 specification my overall impression was that it plugged every feature "hole" in SSE with regards to AltiVec, thereby reminding me greatly of AltiVec. We can dither over details, but I suspect that most people familiar with AltiVec see SSE5 that way.

In the end, however as much as I like SSE5, I can't agree with MPX's thesis that it has a great chance to succeed based solely on its design or feature set. If "good" ISA design was highly correlated with market success, the market would be dramatically different than it is, and we likely would not be talking about this extension to this ISA. AMD will probably succeed or not based on less esoteric stuff like price, performance and availability. Full featured ISA probably doesn't help much for at least two out of those three.
