SGI had to pick something, it's not clear even now what a better choice would have been. Certainly in the early days this bit hard when it was slower than expected and delayed, so he distraction from MIPS which would have held out for a little longer didn't help, but at this stage it seems they really had few options.

I suspect SGI UV will be over 90% x86 anyhow. Some existing installation and migrations will want IPF, but most upgrades will care more about performance and recompile their HPC applications as needed.
