ARM for server

I like the coremark thing. Sure, ARM probably picked the
absolute best case, but if the power-optimized 800MHz
dual-core Cortex-A9 is competitive with Atom at 1.6GHz
(with HT), on that thing, then it likely means that the
performance-optimized version will trash Atom quite well
in general.

I've got a couple of netbooks, and I mostly like them. But
Intel really screwed the pooch on some things:

- 1024x600 is totally idiotic. And that was a limit that
Intel imposed on people early. It's too small for any
real web-browsing today.

Come on - I used 1024x768 in the early nineties. I'm
expecting more out of a computer today - even a cheap
one. The minimum acceptable screen resolution today
(even for 9-10" displays) is 1366x768. That gives you
the "real web experience". Anything less, and you might
as well be puttering around with a cellphone.

- Those cheap SSD's do suck

- And finally: Atom really isn't very good. Don't get me
wrong - it's not bad, but it's simply not very
good either. The chipsets have obviously been atrocious,
but the core itself just isn't great.

And Intel screwed up there too - most Atoms are limited
to 32-bit mode. So they took a non-exciting core, and
then decided to just make it worse. What friggin' idiot
came up with that "marketing strategy"?

Intel needs some competition here. The same way AMD got
them to get off their asses and put the customer first,
and forget about Itanium and P4, I really hope that OMAP4
and other Cortex-A9 users will force Intel to stop playing
those idiotic games in the low end.

I want to see some real technical excellence come out
of Intel. They did it with Core 2 (and Nehalem). But Atom?
Not so much. It falls squarely between "Ho-humm" and "Damn,
that's boring and annoyingly crippled".

Cortex-A9 seems to be some real excellence. Equivalent or
better performance than Atom, integrated chipset that makes
sense, and delivering on the low-power promise.

My only worry (and it's a big one) is that I suspect that
any OMAP4-based (or whatever) netbooks will be done really
cheaply, and they'll have those left-over 1024x600 screens
that the Atom market is finally moving away from.
That sounds almost inevitable, and it would/will be very
sad indeed.

(Of course, I've now seen 15" 1366x768 screens, and my
reaction is a resounding "WTF?". If you want to lug around
some 15" monster, you'd better be getting 1600x1050 or
1920x1200. Even if you're legally blind, having nicely
smoothed fonts is just going to make it easier to
squint at that screen.)
