Integrated Video – How Does it Stack Up?

Application Level Benchmark Scores

In business based benchmarks the lower CPU mark for the VIA seems to be offset by better graphics performance, and in most 3D based tests the VIA clearly wins over the Intel (all except those that are more influenced by raw CPU power then 3D engines). Some more examples (PIII 667EB, 128MB @ 133MHz, Maxtor ATA/100, Win98 @ 1024×768/64K 85Hz):

Notice the lower CPU scores (for the benchmarks that test for it), but higher graphics for the VIA? Winstone is close, but Intel wins (not by much…). Final reality is an older benchmark, very sensitive to CPU speed / power.

Using a Celeron CPU with a 66MHz FSB and 100MHz memory speed – default speed for the Intel, and optimal speed for the VIA (default is 66MHz) the VIA loses some of it’s edge in the graphics. CPU scores are even lower than the Intel, and the Winstone score is significantly lower (Celeron 600).

However, going to a PIII 650 100MHz FSB CPU gives some slightly different results – The VIA allows you to set the memory to 133MHz when using a 100MHz FSB, the Intel allows only 100MHz. Remember – video uses system memory, and its speed has a bearing on both the overall and video performance.
