RAID – On-Board or PCI card?

Different RAID 0 Modes

One thing I thought I’d check out was the different modes. As you may know, changing the size of the data block used can affect the performance, depending on the size of the file(s) used. So since Promise has 3 pre-set modes I thought it would be interesting to see if there was much difference in performance with the tests I’ve been using. If you want to get the optimal performance it is best to set the data block size manually (both cards allow it) and test different sizes to see which works best for you, but since Promise already has three optimum settings why not use their ‘recommendation’?

Not much difference, but you do see a higher sustained data transfer with the AV and Sever settings than with the Desktop. Desktop also has a higher CPU utilization than the others, but the Winstone scores are pretty close. You might say the AV came out on top by a hair.
