Summary

So what did we see? Well, system performance is not limited in a way that using a higher speed CPU gives you diminishing returns, except very slightly in just one test. The Duron does keep up with the Athlon for the most part, but there are a few results that show a larger step between an Athlon 1.0GHz and Duron 950MHz even though there is only a 50MHz difference in the CPU speeds. Question is if that difference is due to the smaller L2 cache of the Duron (64K vs. 256K for the Athlon) or is it due to the slower FSB? Now I did run the memory at 133MHz for both tests so that would pretty much rule out the memory bus. I wonder if DDR SDRAM would make more of a difference with a Duron than it does with an Athlon due to the smaller L2 cache? More cache misses might not have as big of an impact with higher bandwidth memory… might make for an interesting comparison later.

Sometimes you just can’t go by the ‘numbers’ and during testing I do get a ‘feel’ for the system. I truly can say I did notice a performance difference with the different CPU’s used and speeds run while working with the systems. The Duron 800 was clearly the slowest, and even the Duron 950 at times just felt faster. Between the Duron 950 and Athlon 1.0 it was harder to tell, but it was there. Rather than an actual raw speed difference between the Duron 950 and Athlon 1.0 what I could at times sense is what seemed like a hesitation – something I would attribute to the smaller L2 cache rather then a slower FSB. The difference between the Athlon 1.0 and 1.2 or 1.2 and 1.4 was subtler, but at times it was noticeable. The extra 200MHz of CPU speed just made the system a bit more ‘crisp’. The Athlon 1.4 was clearly the fastest – noticably faster then the 1.0. It was even fun to watch it fly through the different benchmarks.
